Background
Bogazici University, located just north of Istanbul, Turkey, is renowned for its pioneering research into algae biotechnology. Researchers at Bogazici explore a diverse range of algae species, evaluating their potential in sustainable biofuels, innovative food products, and extraction of high-value bioactive compounds.
Project Implementation
To support this ambitious research programme, Varicon Aqua installed a state-of-the-art 30,000 L Phyco-Flow photobioreactor at the university’s campus facility. This high-capacity cultivation system is paired with a sophisticated data-acquisition setup, enabling precise control and real-time monitoring of critical production parameters. Alongside the large-scale Phyco-Flow, the facility utilises smaller-scale reactors for strain screening and optimisation.
Results and Impact
Since installation, the Phyco-Flow system has significantly enhanced the university’s algae cultivation capabilities, supporting breakthroughs in biofuel production and facilitating research into high-value extractable compounds. By providing consistent, scalable algal biomass, the system has accelerated Bogazici University's contribution to Turkey’s growing biotechnology sector, positioning them at the forefront of algae-based innovation in the region.
