NANNOCHLOROPSIS CULTURE PLATE
Nanochloropsis CULTURE PLATE, supplied in the UK by Varicon Aqua, is a ready-to-use microalgal inoculant designed for hobbyists, aquarists and small-scale aquaculture systems. Each compact, sealed petri dish contains a unialgal culture of Nanochloropsis oculata, providing a simple way to start live algal cultures when required.
The small, nutrient-dense cells make this culture plate particularly suitable for supporting live-feed production, including rotifers, Artemia, bivalve larvae and other filter-feeding organisms. Stable at cool room temperatures and requiring minimal storage space, Nanochloropsis CULTURE PLATE offers a convenient and biosecure alternative to maintaining liquid starter cultures.

Nanochloropsis CULTURE PLATE contains non-motile Nanochloropsis oculata grown under controlled conditions to ensure purity and viability. Cells typically measure 4–6 microns, providing an appropriate particle size for efficient ingestion by rotifers and early-stage larvae. The culture is supplied in a sealed petri-dish format that can be stored for extended periods at normal cool room temperatures, allowing cultures to be initiated on demand.
To begin culturing, sterile culture water is added to the plate and the cells are gently released before transfer into a small starter volume. With appropriate fertilisation, aeration and light exposure, the culture can be expanded and is typically ready for scale-up within 7–10 days. Once established, it can be used to inoculate larger volumes as needed.
Nanochloropsis is highly adaptable and capable of growth in both freshwater and marine systems. Its consistent nutritional profile and small cell size make it well suited for routine live-feed production in hatcheries, research facilities and aquarium applications. The culture plate format provides a practical, affordable and low-maintenance solution for producing live algae without the ongoing management associated with liquid sub-starters.
